Gardens create beauty, food and hope

Thanks to the University of Maryland / Maryland Grows this informative article about gardens.

Washington County Master Gardener Jessica Lantz tends a butterfly garden.

Fresh air. Sunshine. The smell of warm earth. The feel of tender leaves. The honest sweat of work. The imagining of tastes, fragrance, and beauty to come.

How could gardening be anything but therapeutic?

We who delight in plunging our hands in the soil, tucking in seeds and plants and gently tending them know that gardening feeds the body and soul. And a little soul-feeding is just what we need right now.

Actress Helen Hayes said, “All through the long winter, I dream of my garden. On the first day of spring, I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth. I can feel its energy and my spirits soar.”

December Gardening Tips

Get rid of leaves today, save your yard for tomorrow!

winter landscaping tips realtor

Leaves are almost finished falling and the holiday rush is on the way. Make time to remove those leaves! Doing so will help avoid a period of problems in the future. Last minute pruning is fine as well, especially before Christmas lights are strung.

October Garden Tips

Plant your trees, shrubs and bulbs now! Holding nurseries have gotten their fall shipments in and the plants are bigger because they have been growing all year. Most nurseries don’t charge higher prices for the bigger plants as they want to be sure they sell. It’s a win-win for your landscape and budget!

September Garden Tips

Turf renovation is what September is all about in Maryland.  De-thatching, core aeration, slit seeding and over seeding are all very beneficial.   The warm days and cooler nights help expedite germination and promote better root growth before late fall’s cold temperatures settle in

July Gardens

After record breaking rainfall in June, this years weeds are out of control; both in the lawn and throughout the garden beds.  Even though it is getting warm, lawns are not stressed because of all the wet weather.  A second application of weed control is a good idea and can now be applied on turf.  As for your mulched areas, Round Up can be used to control most weeds.  When used properly, Round Up brand Post Emergent Weed Killer is very safe.  Its soil deactivated and will not leach.  This product  is much more effective that hand pulling weeds because it is a systemic and kills the root system.

May Garden Tips

MAY IS A BUSY MONTH IN THE GARDEN

Lawns have most likely been growing for a few weeks now.  If you despise crabgrass (as many avid gardeners do) this is the time to help prevent it with a turf friendly crabgrass pre-emergent.  Crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures are 54 degrees or higher…..don’t miss out!!

April Garden Tips

April Showers Bring May Flowers so… lets Welcome Spring!!

Here are some garden tips from Dave Dix, my preferred landscape contractor:

This is often the time of year when people apply mulch to their garden beds.  Mulching helps to prevent weed growth and retain moisture around new plantings.  Use a granular, pre-emergent herbicide such as Preen to enhance weed control before applying mulch.
