Crapemyrtle woes

Thanks to the University of Maryland/Maryland Grows this informative article about crapemyrtle woes.

Q:  My crapemyrtle has white stuff on the bark that I’ve never noticed before, though the foliage looks unaffected, if a bit dull lately. I thought these plants were pretty pest-free, so what might this be?

A:  We’ve had a lot of inquiries about this lately. Your plant has Crapemyrtle Bark Scale(CMBS), a non-native insect pest that was discovered in Texas in 2004. It was confirmed in Maryland in 2020. Incidentally, crapemyrtles also can host Crapemyrtle Aphid. And, it’s possible for the two to be infesting a plant simultaneously; their impacts on the plant are similar.

Does your home have curb appeal?

Curb appeal

The outside of your home makes people either want to see more or run the other way.

As the saying goes, you only have one chance to make a first impression. the same goes for your home. Cracked sidewalks, hanging gutters and sports equipment littering the yard are things that will take away from your home’s curb appeal.

Step back and look at your house objectively, including all the way to the roof. When house photos are taken for website, make sure the yard is clean with no kids’ gear on the porch. Put everything away. Instead of bikes, consider adding a colorful Adirondack chair or a rocker for the front porch.

What can you do to increase curb appeal?

People need to be able to find you. Clean and easy to read numbers on your house is a good start...

December Gardening Tips

Get rid of leaves today, save your yard for tomorrow!

winter landscaping tips realtor

Leaves are almost finished falling and the holiday rush is on the way. Make time to remove those leaves! Doing so will help avoid a period of problems in the future. Last minute pruning is fine as well, especially before Christmas lights are strung.

May Garden Tips

MAY IS A BUSY MONTH IN THE GARDEN

Lawns have most likely been growing for a few weeks now.  If you despise crabgrass (as many avid gardeners do) this is the time to help prevent it with a turf friendly crabgrass pre-emergent.  Crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures are 54 degrees or higher…..don’t miss out!!

April Garden Tips

April Showers Bring May Flowers so… lets Welcome Spring!!

Here are some garden tips from Dave Dix, my preferred landscape contractor:

This is often the time of year when people apply mulch to their garden beds.  Mulching helps to prevent weed growth and retain moisture around new plantings.  Use a granular, pre-emergent herbicide such as Preen to enhance weed control before applying mulch.

March Gardening Tips

IT’S MARCH… Spring is just days away and can’t come soon enough!!!!

Thanks to Dave Dix, DCD Lawnscaping, Inc. for these March garden tips.

spring gardens

March can be a tough month weather wise, but working hard outside on a rogue warm day before spring can be very rewarding.  Start pulling weeds and cutting bed edges now to displace spring work.  This is also the proper time to cut back ornamental grasses if you have them on your  property.
