Health benefits of decluttering

Thanks to Cindy Bernstein of Aim4Order for this episode of Tips from the Pros on health benefits of decluttering.

Believe it or not, there are many health benefits of decluttering. It’s more than just making your home more organized, it can actually make positive changes in your health. The changes may be slight or dramatic depending on the situation.

Studies prove it

2016 study from the University of New Mexico discovered that clutter which created a “chaotic and disorderly living space,” has a negative impact on the subject’s ability to feel good.

There is the obvious benefit of having clear walkways in your home. Stacks of papers or other things on stairs or in hallways can be dangerous, especially for seniors. Organizing will remove items laying around that might cause you to stub your toe or even hurt yourself in a fall.

Too many objects in your home will add to the accumulation of more dust. It can even lead to insect or rodent infestations that may cause conditions like asthma and allergies. Removing excess belongings can help reduce the number of allergens in your surroundings.

Clutter can create feelings of overwhelm and anxiety that make your body produce stress hormones like cortisol. Additionally, stress can cause all kinds of physical and emotional problems that can really bring your health down to a bad place. On the other hand, getting rid of clutter, and moving as you do it, will help your body release serotonin, a happy hormone.

Get focused

A sense of focus might elude you when your home is cluttered. But it may come back to you when your home is organized. To do lists can really help you focus on what is necessary to accomplish each day. And checking off items as you complete them, will give you instant gratification.

Getting your home organized may help you to relax, which in turn can help you sleep better. When you have enough sleep, no more tossing and turning all night, you will feel better all day long.

Removing the clutter can feel like a weight has been lifted from your life. In fact, it has. The literal weight of the clutter in your home can be felt. Once it is gone, you will begin to feel lighter and your home will feel more spacious, because it is. The planned flow of your home will be restored and your movements will not be restricted.

Once your home is clutter free you might notice more self-confidence with a sense that everything is in good order. When you have that confidence, you feel like you can accomplish just about anything.

As you get rid of the excess stuff and your home is feeling more roomy, you will start to love your home more. You will feel pride in your home and what you have done with it.
