Park Your Car in Your Garage

For people who have a garage, it can often become more of a storage locker and less of a place to put their car. What is behind your garage door? People store everything from lawn maintenance supplies to clothing and toys in garages. Often times there is no room for the car.

If this task is too much for you, start with one corner and go from there. Give yourself blocks of a couple hours at a time over a two week period to work on the project. There is no rule that says you have to do everything all at once. By breaking the job into smaller parts, you will find it to be less intimidating.

Assess the space you have available. What do you want to do? Do you want to put up shelving or add cabinets for storage? Storage solutions include cabinets, pegboards, shelving, even storage on the ceiling can clear out space in the garage. A better option is to clear out a lot of clutter and have some empty space.

If you have clothing in the garage, when was the last time you used it? If it has been more than a year, you should donate it, give it away or throw it out. If there are toys out there, do your kids still use them? Chances are, you can purge a lot.

Start by sorting everything. Figure out what you want to keep and make a decision on what to do with the rest. When you discover duplicates of items or things that no longer work, that is an easy decision. Let it go!

You want to be able to easily reach for belongings without digging through boxes or moving objects to get to what is behind. The less clutter you have, the quicker it is to find what you need.

Put like items together. All of your tools should be in one area. Sports equipment goes in another area. Gardening, lawn maintenance and snow removal equipment goes somewhere else.

When organizing tools, you can separate nails, screws and bolts by size. Storage containers do not have to cost a lot of money. Look around your house for shelving, bins or containers you already own. Repurpose plastic containers, like restaurant carry out containers or peanut butter jars, for storage. Even baby food jars can be used for small items. When you are ready for a home repair, you will be elated that you can go right to what you need without searching for a half hour.

By keeping everything visible and within reach, you will find that going into the garage will be a much more pleasant experience. It is especially true since you can park your car in there now too.
